BrandStorm™ case histories

BrandStorm™ case history: “OMG, I didn’t realize we were thinking that.”

One company we worked with compared themselves to the following famous people at the beginning of their BrandStorm™ session:

Eli Manning (NFL quarterback)
Janet Jackson (singer/musical artist)
Jim Tressel (former Ohio State football coach)
Phil Mickelson (pro golfer)
Omar Bradley (World War II general)

We were immediately struck by the similarity of all five of the suggestions, since each of these people were considered in some way to be number two in their profession. (Eli laboring in the shadow of Peyton, Janet in the shadow of Michael (before his death), Jim Tressel lost two out of three championship games, Phil, at the time, was just behind Tiger, and even Omar Bradley, who was a leading general in World War II, but second-in-command to Dwight Eisenhower.) Despite the age range of participants in this group, they had revealed a prevailing sense of being number two in their field, an emotional feeling they had never even realized on their own, much less admitted to us in our assessment process. As you might imagine, this led to a very frank discussion about the company’s strengths and weaknesses from a new perspective

BrandStorm™ case history: discovering conflict within the brand

An organization called its staff of more than 100 people together and began the session with our famous person projective imaging exercise, where they compared their brand to the following people:

Winston Churchill
Queen Elizabeth
William Penn
Martin Luther King

At this point in the workshop, one initial conclusion was that although these were stellar examples of statesmen and leaders, three of the four were deceased and the other in her senior years, often a sign that the brand is getting behind the times. But two subsequent names added more insight when they were brought up:

John Wayne
General Custer

When we asked “Why General Custer?” the answer came back, “Because we ride into situations unprepared and get our heads shot off.” Needless to say, this ignited an active buzz throughout the room, as well as an interesting discussion. The John Wayne suggestion was seen in a similar light (based on his movie characters), as someone who shoots first and asks questions later. Between the two groups of people we were able to identify two key weaknesses in the current brand and begin addressing how to eliminate them.
